who we are
Our unique perspective as Black women, combined with our interdisciplinary expertise, allows us to support organisations and individuals in addressing the deep-rooted harms of oppressive systems.
Based in Liverpool, UK, Accra, Ghana, and Alicante, Spain, with strong connections to London, Kenya, Uganda, and the USA, we apply our rich experience across various cultures and communities to enhance the impact of our work.
our values
Our core values reflect the principles that guide our work and our interactions, both within our team and with our clients.
These values guide us as we continually evolve through learning and unlearning. This ensures that our approach remains responsive, reflective, and deeply committed to the communities we serve.
A commitment to an ethics of care.
We recognise that work related to belonging, inclusion, and equity often places an emotional and intellectual burden on those who experience discrimination. With a strong commitment to care, we design our activities to avoid causing further harm and to support marginalised individuals. In research, we reject extractive practices, embracing approaches that centre care and respect for the voices and contributions of minoritised communities.
We adopt an interactive and participatory approach.
While BRK Ujima brings the necessary experience, knowledge, and expertise to undertake our work, we recognise and respect that our clients have a deep understanding of their specific concerns, strengths, and limitations. By involving our clients in every stage—from design to implementation—we ensure that each activity builds upon their existing efforts and empowers them to continue the work long after our engagement ends.
We create and maintain safe spaces.
Real change requires both learning and unlearning, which can often bring discomfort. BRK Ujima recognises this and understands that for our clients to engage with this process, they must first feel safe. Our activities are designed to challenge without condemnation, fostering learning and unlearning in a supportive environment, free from condescension. In doing so, we ensure that safe spaces are created and maintained for our clients.
We stay in our lane & we pass the mic.
We recognise that people who face oppression are not a monolith, and our experiences differ based on the identities we embody. As a result, we believe in staying in our lane. This means we do not take the lead on work related to challenges we haven’t personally faced. When the work is better suited to others, we pass the mic by recommending appropriate individuals or organisations. This ensures we do not take up space that isn’t ours to claim.
We are committed to learning and (un)learning.
These values are intended to guide us, but they are not static. Just as we encourage our clients to embrace the discomfort that comes with learning new ways of engaging and unlearning harmful forms of interaction, we consider this an important aspect of our development—both as individuals and as an organisation. We will continuously review our work and values, staying open to abandoning practices that counter our aims and adopting better approaches toward a more inclusive and just way of working.
Guided by a radical and revolutionary love for Black people and all marginalised groups, and inspired by the spirit of Ujima, we are not just challenging the status quo—we are redefining what is possible.
